Maybelline Lifter Plump Lip Plumping Glosses are a new spicy version of their original Lifter Glosses. They come in 8 shades and retail for $12.99. The key ingredient to thank for the heat is capsicum frutescens fruit extract, or chili pepper extract.

You know how every once in a while orange chicken from Panda Express somehow ends up a little extra spicy than usual? That’s what these are like, that’s the heat level I get from them. It’s mild, maybe approaching medium if you’re sensitive to spicy stuff. I think it’s totally tolerable and it comes on slowly. Once the heat takes hold, it stays spicy for quite some time. After a little bit, my mouth starts to feel the heat as well, like I ate something hot. 45 minutes after application, I can still feel it but at this point it is starting to fade.

They don’t seem to be fragranced and hardly smell like anything except a very faint chemical scent. The only detectable flavoring is just the heat. I get a barely noticeable plumping effect that just looks like my lips are very well hydrated but not any larger than they normally are. After consecutively lip swatching about 3 of them, I started noticing my lips getting red. One single application doesn’t seem to do that though.

I’m not a huge lip plumper person so I don’t have a whole lot to compare these to. I have tried the Too Faced Lip Injection and I would say these are more intense than that but it is a different feeling. That one has a unique sensation that is closer to stinging/pinpricks (a very toned down version of that description though). These are definitely just like spicy food lol.

Texture-wise, they feel similar to the original Maybelline Lifter Glosses with a substantial, almost balmy texture, but are still very comfortable and not sticky at all. They hang on and stay glossy for at least a few hours without disappearing from the lips or changing texture.

Blush Blaze

Blush Blaze a sheer light pink with very subtle and very fine micro shimmer. It is mostly a neutral pink and leans ever so slightly warm. On the lips, this is so sheer and so close to my lip color that it hardly looks like anything but a clear gloss on me. The micro shimmer in this is too fine to be able to actually see on the lips either.

Mauve Bite

Mauve Bite is a sheer light purplish pink with a scattering of larger golden sparkle. This looks almost identical to Blush Blaze when actually applied and the sparkle in this is hardly noticeable and somewhat sparse.

Pink Sting

Pink Sting is a sheer light bubblegum pink. This one is the lightest pink and is on the cooler side as well. It has no sparkle or shimmer in it at all and actually stains a tiny bit as well. It is the only shade that I found causes staining. 

Red Flag

Red Flag is an ultra sheer neutral red without any shimmer or sparkle. It is MUCH lighter on the lips that it appears in the container but does add a tiny bit of color to my lips.

Peach Fever

Peach Fever is a warmer creamy peach without any shimmer or sparkle. This one was noticeably more pigmented than all the previous shades and had a slightly thicker texture as well.

Hot Chili

Hot Chili is a medium brownish red without any shimmer or sparkle. This was like Peach Fever in that it had more color payoff than most of the other shades and a slightly thicker texture.

Cocoa Zing

Cocoa Zing is a sheer purplish brown with purple and gold sparkle. In the container, it looks deeper and the sparkle is more noticeable than it actually looks on the lips. The color of this is very similar to Fenty Hot Chocolit. Both have about the same level of color payoff and the sparkles in both are even the same color but the Fenty one has more visible sparkle and I can feel it more as well if I press my lips together.

Hot Honey

Hot Honey has a transparent yellow-orange base with lots of pinky-gold sparkle. It ends up looking clear and colorless on the lips but has much more noticeable sparkle payoff than any of the other sparkly shades. I can’t feel the sparkle if I press my lips together.

Maybelline Shadow Blocks are a newer eyeshadow release that are available in 5 shade variations and retail for about $10 each. They come in stacks of 3 shades – two are mattes and there is one complementary shimmer. When playing with these, I accidently pulled apart one shade from the stack… apparently that’s something you can do with these if you like the idea of mixing and matching shades from different ones to create your own version. The only ones you can’t do this with are the bottom shade of each trio.

As soon as I started swatching these I noticed that the mattes were VERY sheer and easy to brush off the skin. The shimmers seemed have a little more substance to them. Some were more opaque than others but they had a creamier feel and more color payoff than the mattes in general. All the palest mattes hardly show up on the eye and the deeper ones that do show up end up looking patchy because they don’t adhere very well. They blend out so easily that they are easy to blend away.

I only tested wear-time with the North 3rd & Bedford Ave stack and did looks with all the rest. This trio lasted decently well over primer but was noticeably creased by lunchtime without. I wore all the others all day as well but just didn’t pay as much attention to how they held on. None of them looked great by the end of the day though.

I get some fallout if I attempt to build up the color payoff with both the mattes and shimmers. The fallout isn’t a huge amount and doesn’t stick to the face too much.

These may bring to mind the Kaja Beauty Bento Bouncy Eyeshadow Trios. Those are a little more than twice the price but is the quality more than twice as good? I think so. I don’t have to spend much time at all building up the color, they blend just as readily, and adhere to the lids with zero issues.

These are mostly a miss. There are a few things that I like but for the most part, they are not worth your time or money.

26th and Madison Ave

This has one very light matte highlight shade, one very deep matte, and a pale shimmer with a just a hint of light green to it. I feel this one could use another midtone matte to help get a better blend out of the darker green shade. The deeper green is not quite pigmented enough and applies with a patchy appearance. This was the best I could get it to apply just over bare lids and with a regular eyeshadow primer. The shimmer shade is the best shadow of the selection here and even that is not all that impressive.

82nd and Park Ave

This trio has more of a rose gold theme. It was definitely better and easier to use than the green trio and as with that one, the shimmer was the best quality shade. The deepest shade isn’t very dark on me and so it was easier to get this to look evenly applied.

Broadway and Prince St

Here is the purple trio. This one doesn’t follow the pattern of the others and instead of including a deep matte, it includes a pastel lavender as the bottom shade. This pastel shade hardly shows up on me but it did kind of give the look a misty appearance… not intended but I don’t mind it. The shimmer is very sheer but has a bright enough base color to show up well.

West 4th and Perry St

I like the color selection of this trio the best and was impressed at how these shades swatched compared to all the others, but I wasn’t happy with how they applied to the eye. The shimmer in this one is probably the most impressive of all the shades in this product line but it is patchy and uneven once applied to the lid. I can spend extra time messing with it to get it to look better but it is a pain in the ass to use and there are better eyeshadows like this out there. The lighter matte was decent and the deeper one was hard to blend out smoothly.

North 3rd and Bedford Ave

This was the first of these trios that I tried and I liked this one the best of them all despite how sheer all the shades were. The deepest matte hardly adhered but somehow ended up looking very evenly blended. This is one I might use again for a barely there kind of eyeshadow look.

Maybelline Lifter Glosses are supposed to hydrate lips with hyaluronic acid and make them look fuller. They come in 10 shades, contain 5.4 ml / 0.18 fl oz of product and retail for around $6.99 each.

Pearl

Pearl is clear with different sizes of silver sparkle. Similar to Fenty Diamond Milk.

Ice

Ice is an ultra sheer light pink with incredibly subtle sparkle particles. Once on the lips this reads as a clear gloss with no sparkles.

Moon

Moon is a light pink shimmer with some larger sparkles mixed in. Similar to Fenty Fussy.

Silk

Silk is a mauve with very tiny pink and gold sparkles.

Petal

Petal is a medium pink with larger golden sparkles.

Amber

Amber is a light peach. No sparkles.

Stone

Stone is a light pinky brown. No sparkles.

Crystal

Crystal looks very gold in the container but on the lips this is a clear gloss with lots of large golden sparkles.

Performance

Shade: I have the shades 20 Classic Ivory, which is just a touch darker than my natural skin tone, and 10 Porcelain Ivory, which is a perfect match for me. I would say both of these shades have very neutral undertones. For the demo photos below, I used 20 Classic Ivory.

Application: I am able to apply this equally well with a damp sponge or a brush. It spreads out super easily and blends out really fast. I feel like using a brush perhaps gives the skin a dewier, more radiant finish than using sponge, which is the opposite of what I would expect. When first applied, it leaves behind a lightly tacky feel that resembles what a gel-cream moisturizer or serum feels like on the skin, except it doesn’t seem to soak in or dry down completely. If you plan on applying powder blush or bronzer over this, I recommend setting the foundation to avoid any patchiness.

Texture and Finish: The texture feels lightweight, whipped, and very hydrating. It does not feel oily – the hydration feels more water based. The finish is lightly dewy. I wouldn’t say it’s incredibly radiant or shiny. I do not see any shimmery particles. The dewiness seems to come from the hydrating ingredients. If you set this foundation with a powder, the radiance will go away. It offers a slight smoothing of texture and pores on the skin, at least when it is initially applied. As my skin gets a little more shiny throughout the day, pores and texture naturally become more obvious. I wouldn’t say they look emphasized, though.

Coverage: The coverage is light and builds up to medium. I am able to layer this quite a bit without it looking cakey, but be aware that the more you build this up, the longer it takes to dry down. It doesn’t dry down completely but after a few minutes, it eventually feels less wet on the skin.

Longevity: I need to touch up with powder or a blotting sheet half way through the day, especially on a warmer day or if I’m more active that day. However, I don’t have any issues with it breaking up on me.

Worth Buying?

Yes. This is one of the more beautiful foundations I’ve come across in a long time. If you have dry, textured, more mature skin, and don’t need super high coverage, you might want to give this one a try. This foundation is very forgiving and super easy to work with.

Base

• Physicians Formula The Healthy Foundation in LC1 – I used the doe foot applicator this foundation comes with to dab this all over my face, blended it in with a foundation brush, and did a final blend with a damp sponge.
• It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Corrector Concentrate Cream in Light – With a small concealer brush, I applied this to the darkest parts of my under eyes.
• Loreal Infallible Total Cover Color Correct Kit in 225 – I used the yellow shade in this to spot conceal all over. I first used an eyeliner brush to precisely place the product and then used a small pencil brush to blend around the edges.
• Too Faced Peach Perfect Mattifying Loose Setting Powder – I used a large fluffy brush to set my foundation with this and a smaller fluffy brush to set my concealer.
• Loreal Infallible Setting Spray – To bring some life back to the skin and help the makeup last longer I spritzed this on and used a duo fiber brush to lightly press it into the skin.

Brows

• Mac Shape + Shade Brow Tint in Taupe – I used just the liquid pen side to draw in faux “hairs” where I have the most sparse areas in my brows.
• Anastasia Brow Powder Duo in Taupe – I used an angled brush to pick up the darkest shade in this duo to fill in my brows.

Eyes

• Milani Eyeshadow Primer – I applied this with my finger and blended it out with concealer brush.
• Revolution Pro Night and Day Palette – Using a Sonia Kashuk Large Eyeshadow Brush, I applied the shade Paved (which is a matte medium brown) to the crease and blended it toward the brow bone. With a Morphe M506 brush, I applied Wooden (deeper brown with a satin finish) to the outer corner and blended into the previous shade. With a Mac 239, I applied Steel (duo chrome purple/green shimmer) all over the lid. I used my finger to apply more of Steel to the lid to see if it would apply more intensely but the brush did a fine job all on it’s own.
• Covergirl Exhibitionist Mascara in Very Black – I used a lash curler and then applied one coat of this to the upper lashes.

Cheeks

• L.A. Girl Just Blushing Blush in Just Because – I used this to sculpt my cheekbones and around my hairline.
• Clinique Cool Down Cheek Pop Palette – I used Heather Pop from this palette on the lower part of my cheeks and Ballerina Pop on the higher part of my cheeks, almost like a highlighter.
• Hourglass Ambient Lighting Palette – For a bit more shine, I applied Incandescent Light from the center of this palette to the tops of my cheekbones.

Lips

• Maybelline Superstay Ink Crayons in Stay Exceptional and Lead The Way – I used a lip brush to apply Stay Exceptional to the outside edges of my lips and swiped Lead the Way on the center of my lips.

Base Makeup

• Too Faced Born This Way Concealer in Almond – I used this in place of foundation.
• Pixi Brightening Peach Concentrate – I applied this to the very darkest parts of my under eye circles to help cancel them out.
• It Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Concealer in 13.0 – I applied this over the peach corrector and to the rest of my under eye area.
• Hourglass Veil Translucent Setting Powder – I set everything including my eye primer with this.

Brows

• Mac Shape + Shade Brow Tint in Taupe – I used just the liquid side to fill in gaps and to extend the tail of my brows a bit.
• Viseart The Essential Brow Palette – I used the second shade in from the left on the bottom row to fill in my brows.

Eyes

• Anastasia Beverly Hills Eye Primer
• Anastasia Beverly Hills Single Eyeshadow in Blanc – I used this on my brow bone and inner corner.
• ColourPop Pressed Pigment in Centerfold – I used this as my transition shade and applied it with a Luxie 231 Small Tapered Blending Brush. I also applied it in a diffused way on my lower lash line using a slightly fluffy brush.
• Maybelline The City Mini Diamond District Eyeshadow Palette – I used just the burgundy shade from this palette for my inner and outer lids. I blended the color up into my crease area. I also used an angled liner to apply this close to my lashes on my lower lash line and blended it into Centerfold.
• Essence Melted Chrome Eyeshadow in 01 Zinc About You – I applied this to the center of my lid with a Real Techniques Instapop Crease Brush.
• Mac Blacktrack Pro Longwear Fluidline – I tightlined with this using a Mac 231 brush.
• Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Liner
• Benefit Roller Lash Mascara
• Make Up For Ever Artist Color Pencil in 502 Infinite Sand – I used this to neutralize the natural pink tones on my lower waterline.

Maybelline Diamond District City Mini is a 6-pan eyeshadow palette featuring two rich jewel tones and a light golden shimmer. It retails for $10 and is available at Ulta and Target.

In general this formula has good color payoff and blends easily. The exception to that is the dark green shade. It has a lot of pigment but it isn’t as easy to blend or apply in an even way. It is meant to be a liner according to the back of the packaging so I can understand why it’s different. It is a breeze to use as a liner with an angled brush. To use it as an eyeshadow, I need to be patient and spend plenty of time blending.

The one shimmer shade is a neutral gold that pairs perfectly with the cooler tones in this palette. It applies more easily and quickly to the lid than a lot of other shimmers I’ve used, so I love it in that respect. However, it does have some fallout that ends up on my cheeks during application. During wear time, I don’t get much fallout. To avoid this, you could use a damp brush to apply the color or do your face makeup last.

The deep purple shade is probably my favorite color in the palette. It’s a cooler toned purple which isn’t super easy to find. The color applies evenly and blends out really smoothly.

On me, these shadows wear for about 7 hours without a primer and 8-9 hours with a primer.

In this look, I am wearing the lightest shade in the inner corner, the light pink and darker purple in the crease, the taupe on the lower lash line, the green all over the lid, and the gold on the center of the lid. I am also wearing Benefit’s Roller Liner, Tarte’s Double Take Eyeliner (just the pencil side) as my upper waterline liner, and NYX Worth The Hype Mascara. For brows I applied Mac Shape + Shade Brow Tint in Taupe. I applied these colors much more heavily for this photo than I would wear them in my day-to-day life. The green shade is pigmented but it also blends away easily so I really had to pack it on with my fingers for this level of pigmentation. Just using a brush will get you something quite a bit sheerer.

Maybelline’s City Mini Eyeshadow Palettes contain six shades in a small compact, come in various color combinations, and retail for about $10. Matte About Town‘s shades are all matte and are on the warmer neutral side. Even the pinker-toned shades designated for the crease are warm-toned once applied, though they look like they might be cool-toned just by looking at the pans.

The eyeshadows are very soft and will kick up excess powder when tapping a brush into the pans. I have worn these eyeshadows maybe 4 times and I can already see a dent forming in the pans so I doubt it would last long with daily use.

The shadows are very blendable and have decent but not great color payoff. It’s a good formula for those that struggle with blending but will disappoint those that prefer stronger pigmentation.

Personally, I enjoy this formula for easy, every day eye looks where I want to look put together. This palette specifically is great if you are looking for some good basic crease and transition shades. If you want to do a deep, sultry smoky eye, this isn’t quite going to get you there without the help of other products.

It wore on me for 8 hours without creasing or fading both with and without a primer.

Maybelline’s Pink Edge Palette, $12 at Ulta, has everything you need (minus lip color) to create a cooler toned mauve-y look. The colors are well coordinated and come together to create a look that is a teensy bit more colorful than what you get with your typical neutral palette.



The eyeshadows are kind of powdery but they have good, buildable pigmentation. They feel smooth to the touch and blend out easily on the eye. All of the mattes perform well and the shimmers are mostly decent, though I think they are the weakness of the palette. They don’t adhere as well to the lid as I’d like. Most of the shades have very little visible fallout except for the rose gold and black eyeshadows. The rose gold applies best with a damp brush to minimize fallout and get the most popping shine out of it.

The blush goes beautifully with the eyeshadows. It’s just bright enough to add some life to the overall look. It has stronger pigmentation than I thought it would so I only need to tap my brush into it lightly for a pop of color.

The highlighter is similar in texture to the shimmer eyeshadows with shimmer that disperses very readily and evenly over the skin. It is VERY subtle though. It’s the type of shimmer that you can see better in certain types of light, like sunlight. The effect is more of a sparkle than a sheen. I applied it pretty heavily for the photos and it’s still subtle! It is a highlighter that would be nearly impossible to over apply.

Overall, I like this palette and am happy to have it in my collection. I love that this has a blush in it and that all the colors coordinate so well because it makes for a perfect little travel palette.

Product Description

What it is: Maybelline The Falsies Push Up Angel Mascara is supposed to give your lashes a lifted, flared out effect and volume at the root thanks to the unique brush. The formula is designed to hold “the lifted wing look in place.” This is not the waterproof version, but they do offer one as well.

Packaging: The packaging is beautiful and feels well made. The wand twists open and closed easily.

Smell/Fragrance: I don’t smell any fragrance but there is somewhat of a chemical smell. It’s not something I notice with normal use.

Performance

The very first time I applied this, I remember being impressed with how smoothly and evenly it applied over my lashes. Over time I found that it didn’t apply the same way reliably every time. Some days my lashes would stick to each other, as if they’d been coated too heavily. I think it has something to do with how much product is coating the applicator. This tube has been open for about 2 months and since then, it seems to have gotten better, or maybe I’ve just learned to work with it better.

The brush is super skinny and there are bristles on only one side. I have a tendency with my eye shape to end up with mascara on my lids, so I figured this applicator would be a good fit, but it ended up disappointing in this regard. It’s not nearly as messy as some extra huge brushes are, but I still do have to be a little extra mindful not to mess up my eyeshadow.

The color is nice and dark and it gives my lashes a semi glossy finish. Though my lashes sometimes stick together, it doesn’t leave actual clumps of product on my lashes, which is nice. It holds a curl, doesn’t weigh my lashes down, and remains smudgeproof throughout the day once it dries down. I find that it dries quickly, within a few minutes. Rarely do I notice any product flaking off during the day.

This requires a bit more work to remove than my Benefit Roller Lash. It comes off fully when I use Neutrogena Makeup Remover Wipes but I do need to spend a few extra minutes working on it to remove it all.

Worth Buying?

I like it but I don’t love it. I’ve gotten good use out of it but I personally wouldn’t repurchase this.

If you are a fellow beauty junkie, you can relate when I say that sometimes it seems like nothing new has come out. Many times it feels like new product releases are just a way to release an old product in new packaging. Maybelline Color Tattoo Eye Chromes ($10 each) are the refreshing change I have been craving. They are long-wearing liquid eyeshadows that pack a punch of shiny color. I’ve tested all the colors at least once, some more than once.

They require some practice to get the hang of but then they are fantastic. I recommend applying these one eye at a time and immediately blending the color out using a synthetic brush. Using my fingers sheered the color out a lot.

It was easiest to just use one or two shades per eye, using a clean brush for each new shade. I was able to apply these as a base and then go in on top with powder shadows to get a more dimensional look. With the very dark shades, it was helpful to use a transition or mid-tone powder eyeshadow afterwards to get a smoother blend in the crease area.

Aside from how well they hold up throughout the day, my favorite aspect of these is that the glitter in shades like Fool’s Gold and Gunmetal actually stayed adhered to my lid and never flaked off. In the future it would be nice to see more glitter and perhaps even matte shades released. I think this formula has a lot of potential.

Pros:

• No glitter fallout
• 12 hour crease-free wear
• Very shiny finish
• Very transfer resistant

Cons:

• They dry down extremely fast, making them difficult to work with
• If you blend them out with your fingers, they can sheer out a lot
• They can get patchy if you try to add a second layer

Worth Buying?

Yes. I have never been able to wear any other eyeshadow as long as these, not even the other Color Tattoo formulas that come in pots or pencils. They still look freshly applied at the end of the day. They are a little more work to use than a typical powder eyeshadow but the wear-time makes it worth it.

Maybelline Vivid Matte Liquid Lip Color is supposed to offer high impact matte color in a comfortable-to-wear formula. The packaging is very similar to a lip gloss with a slanted doe foot applicator. There is a fragrance which I can both smell and taste when I first apply it but it fades after several minutes. Available in 10 shades, it contains 7.7 ml / 0.26 fl oz., retails for around $7.99 and is available at most major drugstores, Target, Walmart, and Ulta.

Performance

I purchased the shades Nude Flush, which is a warm light pink, and Berry Boost, which is a deep fuchsia. I was expecting this product to feel drying but immediately upon application it had a velvety, lightweight, mousse-like texture. Initially, it had a soft sheen but after a few minutes it dried down to more of a satin finish. The color is intense and opaque but can be sheered out to a degree. After 6 hours there was still color on my lips but it looked dry around the edges of my mouth it had worn off completely on the inner part of my lips. The longest I’d go without touching up would be about 4 hours with these.

Worth Buying?

Reading the reviews others left on this product, I can see that some people had the expectation that it would dry down like other matte lip products. Being someone who typically doesn’t wear matte lipsticks, I wasn’t expecting this to dry down completely and on the contrary, I liked this. If you have trouble with dry lips and avoid mattes for that reason, you might enjoy this product.

Packaging: The packaging seems decent, fairly sturdy, easy to open and close and it stays closed securely. There is no mirror and there is a small sponge-tip applicator included. I like that you can see all the shades through the top of the palette. On the back, they included several shade combination suggestions for looks.

Smell/Fragrance: No discernable smell or fragrance.

Performance

Application: The shadows require some layering and extra time blending and look slightly better when applied over a primer. There is some fallout but it’s minimal. To get the most color payoff on the lid, I recommend using a flat eyeshadow brush to pat the color on both before and after blending.

Texture: Texture varies for all the shades. The mattes are drier and pressed more firmly into the pan while the shimmers generally are softer and easier to work with. There wasn’t a whole lot of powder kicked up in the pan after using a brush to pick up some shadow. These weren’t nearly as smooth and buttery as the eyeshadows in my Urban Decay and Lorac Pro Palettes but they were definitely still usable.

Pigmentation: In general, the matte shades were less pigmented, drier, and harder to blend. The matte black was the worst offender. The matte yellowy cream on the top row was actually pretty good, though, and the color was nice for cancelling out a bit of redness on the eyelids and brow bone. The shimmery shades had much better color payoff but when blending a lot of the pigment would easily be sheered out so, again, layering was key.

Longevity: Without primer these lasted about 3-4 hours before they started creasing and looking patchy. Wearing these over a primer increases wear time by 1 – 2 hours.

Overall Opinion

---

Pros:

• Mix of warm and cool-toned shades
• Mix of shimmers and mattes
• Reasonable price for 12 eyeshadows
• Lasts most of the day with the help of a primer
• Not much fallout

Cons:

• Pigmentation is just okay overall
• The matte shades had the worst pigmentation
• A bit patchy during application – requires patience when blending

Worth Buying?

This palette has everything you’d need for an “everyday” type of look. If you are on a tight budget and/or don’t mind putting in a bit of extra effort applying your shadows, it’s a viable option. It has it’s drawbacks but you can certainly make it work. For someone who is into higher end eyeshadows and already has an Urban Decay Naked, Lorac Pro, or similar neutral palette, I don’t feel this would add any value to your collection.

I haven’t always found these limited edition quads at Ulta, but this time they happened to be there.

Application: I was able to get more even application if I applied these over a primer, though the color payoff was about the same. The glitter/shimmer stands out more as well when I apply them over a primer. There was a substantial amount of fallout from the darkest shade so I would recommend applying your foundation and concealer after your eyeshadow if you plan to use this shade. The glitter adheres to the lid fairly well.

Texture: The two lightest shades are silky soft and blend incredibly easily. The brightest (3rd shade from left) shade is soft but not as silky and is slightly powdery. It needs to be layered a bit to make it look true to pan but is easy enough to work with. It takes a tiny bit more effort to blend. The darkest shade is the most powdery and has the most fallout of all the shades but the glitter in it adheres surprisingly well to the lid. This one is best applied over a black cream base to get it to look true to pan.

Pigmentation: All of the shades are semi-sheer but easy to build up and apply evenly. The last shade is the only one that requires a cream base to look on the lid the way it looks in the pan.

Longevity: When worn over bare lids, these started showing minor creasing after 3 hours and got worse over the next few hours. I wore these over a primer for 10 hours and saw no creasing. There was, however, some fading after about 9 hours.

Overall Opinion

Pros:

• The eyeshadows are soft and not packed too tightly in the pan.
• They are sheer but have good, even color payoff.
• This quad offers on-trend colors for this season.
• These quads are inexpensive.

Cons:

• The darkest shade isn’t true to pan unless you apply it over a black cream base.
• If you have oilier lids, you’re going to need a primer for these to last all day.
• Limited edition drugstore products can sometimes be difficult to track down.

Worth Buying? If you like purple eyeshadows, yes. These quads don’t offer the most exceptional quality but they are easy enough to make work. The only one that requires some extra finesse is the darkest shade but I feel that the effect it gives makes it worth the effort.

Selection: There are six shades.

Colors/Finishes:

• Pure Nude – Sheer, pale, champagne shimmer. No glitter.
• Beige-ing Beauty – Sheer, pale golden shimmer with gold glitter.
• Nude Compliment – Semi opaque taupe shimmer. No glitter.
• Sleek & Spice – Semi opaque bronze shimmer. No glitter.
• Caramel Cool – Semi opaque copper shimmer. No glitter.
• Stroke of Midnight – Semi opaque black with silver glitter.

Packaging: These are contained in the same type of glass pots that the permanent Color Tattoo Eyeshadows are. The plastic black lids have labels with the name of the product and color on them. You can see through the bottom of the packaging what the color inside looks like. The lids are not rounded so you can stack them but you might want to keep them in a small container so they don’t slide around. New at the store, these had plastic seals covering the entire packaging to prevent people from opening them before purchase.

Smell/Fragrance: These are not fragranced. Five of them had no smell at all. Nude Compliment had a very faint metallic smell.

Performance

Application: I usually apply Color Tattoos with my fingers because they blend much more easily that way, but you can use a brush to get better color payoff. I use synthetic brushes with these because they seem to clean up more easily. The four shades that have no glitter are easy to work with – they blend out and layer well. The glitter in Beige-ing Beauty and Stroke of Midnight didn’t move or come off throughout the day. Stroke of Midnight was the only real dud in the group. It looked very patchy if I applied it sheerly or attempted to blend it out. When I tried building up the color to look more opaque, it dried down too quickly and ended up flaking off as I was applying the second layer.

Texture: They are all creamy but not emollient at all. The creamiest and most blendable one was Sleek & Spice. Nude Compliment and Stroke of Midnight were the driest. The more metallic shades can have a tendency to make my lids look more dry/crepey, especially if I apply them heavily.

Pigmentation: Nude Compliment, Sleek & Spice, and Caramel Cool have about the same pigmentation and could be applied more sheerly with fingers or more opaquely with a brush. Beig-ing Beauty is the sheerest but does have a nice golden sparkle to it. Pure Nude can be built up to look semi-sheer but if I built this one up too much it looked cakey. Stroke of Midnight is patchy and only looks good if it is made to look opaque but this must be done very quickly before the shadow dries down.

Longevity: These averaged about 11.5 hours on me before they creasesed. The lighter shades creased first at about 10.5 hours.

Worth Buying?

If you like the colors and you know you like this formula, then I’d say all but Stroke of Midnight are worth picking up. Sleek & Spice is very similar to Bad to the Bronze and Pure Nude is very similar to the LE shade Barely Beige which I believe came out Fall/Winter 2012.

Application: These looked very similar either over a primer or over bare lids. All the shades have good color payoff but don’t look as even as I’d like on the lid so I had to apply 2-3 layers for an even application. The two lighter shades were easy to blend but the two darkest shades took more work. The rightmost shade was the hardest to blend and actually became very patchy when I attempted to blend it.

Texture: The shadows were soft but not as silky as the ones in the other quads. They aren’t stiff or packed too tightly in the pan so plenty will come off on a brush when you swipe it over the powder. They had very little fallout when I was applying them as long as I tapped off any excess from the brush.

Pigmentation: The lightest shade had enough pigmentation to hide redness and veins on the lids. The second lightest shade had a similar amount of pigmentation and was easy enough to blend out smoothly. The two darkest shades had very good pigmentation but were difficult to get to blend out smoothly.

Longevity: When worn over bare lids, these started showing minor creasing after 5 hours and got worse over the next few hours. When worn over a primer, they creased very slightly after 6 hours and remained that way until I removed the shadows at the 8th hour.

Overall Opinion

Pros:

• The eyeshadows are soft and not packed too tightly in the pan.
• They have great color payoff.
• I got very little fallout as long as I tapped off any excess from the brush.
• These quads are inexpensive.

Cons:

• The two darkest shades are hard to blend.
• The two darkest shades are very close in color and aren’t really distinguishable from each other once applied.
• If you have oilier lids, you’re going to need a primer for these to last all day.

Worth Buying? It’s definitely a usable palette but it would have been far better if the two shades on the right weren’t so similar and were easier to blend. It’s not going to be the best choice if you like doing smokey eyes and you like to have a nice smooth gradient. It could be good for grungy, smokey looks or graphic stuff like I did in the previous post though. There’s just enough that I don’t like to say that I wouldn’t recommend it.

Application: These were a breeze to apply, much like the shades in Bare It Buff were. They weren’t too sheer, applied evenly, and blended really easily. The small tip on the included applicator is actually really nice for applying the lighter shimmery colors precisely to the inner corner of the eye. I’d still use a brush to apply the darker colors and to blend, though.

Texture: The shadows are very silky and buttery smooth to the touch, and plenty comes off on fingers with a single swipe over the powder. Using a brush did cause some eyeshadow to kick up the from than pan. Interestingly, though, they had almost no fallout when I was applying them as long as I tapped off any excess from the brush.

Pigmentation: These shadows are going to create an overall sheer effect if you apply them straight to the lid and will look slightly more intense over a basic primer. The taupe and black shades can be made to look like they do in the pan if applied over a creamy base such as a NYX Jumbo Pencil, Mac Paint Pot, or Maybelline Color Tattoo.

Longevity: Without a primer, these creased after 6.5 hours. Over a primer, they lasted 8 hours with no creasing.

Overall Opinion

• The eyeshadows are very silky and smooth.
• They have fairly good color payoff, even better over a creamy base.

Worth Buying? After my disappointment with yesterday’s quad, Take It Off, this little quad was such a pleasant surprise. Granted, if you have a warmer skin tone or just prefer warmer colors in general, this may not be your cup of tea. I really liked it though, personally. It’s definitely a set of colors I’d reach for when doing my “everyday” makeup.

Application: Being darker shades, these took longer to apply than the shades in Bare It Buff because I spent more time blending. The lightest shade applied evenly and smoothly on the eye and actually had really nice color payoff for a drugstore highlight shade. The second shade also had smooth even coverage and was easy to blend for being a darker color. The third shade from the left was less pigmented than the purple shade, didn’t apply as evenly, and didn’t blend as easily. The black shade had good color payoff but it looked patchy and wasn’t as easy to blend. The three darker shades are pretty similar once you get them on the eye and it’s hard to differentiate them, which makes this palette less versatile.

Texture: The shadows are very silky and buttery smooth to the touch, and plenty comes off on fingers with a single swipe over the powder. Using a brush did cause some eyeshadow to kick up the from than pan. Interestingly, though, they had almost no fallout when I was applying them as long as I tapped off any excess from the brush.

Pigmentation: The pigmentation isn’t incredible but it’s not bad. When I swatch these, the color payoff is really nice but when I apply them to the eye they don’t look as intense.

Yes, the eyeshadows are soft and silky eyeshadows and you can get the color to look intense with the right base but the two shades on the right were just kind of finicky. If you are on a budget and are okay with “making it work”, then this might be worth checking out. If you have a hard time doing the smokey eye thing, you probably won’t like this as much.

What it is: Maybelline Bare It Buff Plush Silk Eyeshadow came out as part of the Spring 2014 Dare To Go Nude Collection. It is a limited edition quad with warm-toned pale neutral shades and is the lightest option of the 4 available quads. The formula is supposed to be silky smooth and offer rich color payoff.

Price/Quantity: About $10.00 for 2.5g

Availability: I found mine at Rite Aid. Sometimes limited edition stuff can be hard to track down but typically they can be found at drugstores like Rite Aid, Walgreens, and CVS, and other stores like Fred Meyer, and Bed Bath and Beyond stores that have a Harmon’s inside.

Selection: There are 4 quads to choose from.

Colors/Finishes: The individual shades do not have names but I will describe them from left to right:



• Sheer, satin, warm white with large silver glitter.
• Semi-sheer, shimmery, pale yellow with a pink duo chrome. The duo chrome gives an illusion of being less sheer. No glitter.
• Sheer, satin, warm pale pink. No glitter.
• Semi-sheer, shimmery, warm bronze with medium-sized silver glitter.

Packaging: Plastic, snap-shut compact. It opens and closes easily and stays closed securely. Inside, there is a double sided sponge-tip applicator. New at the store, the quads are sealed with a small perforated label that breaks when you open the lid.

Smell/Fragrance: No discernible smell or fragrance.

Performance

Application: These were easy and quick to apply and blend. They adhered well to the lid. They looked pretty much the same whether I applied them over a primer or not. The glitter in the lightest and darkest shades does fall down on to cheeks, though. This is something that can be worked around by using a sticky or creamy base to give the glitter something to adhere to. You could also just apply your eye makeup first, wipe off any glitter fallout, and finish up the rest of your face.

Texture: The shadows are very silky and buttery smooth to the touch, and plenty comes off on fingers with a single swipe over the powder. They aren’t very powdery and using a brush doesn’t cause much powder to kick up in the pan. I didn’t notice any eyeshadow fallout (aside from the glitter).

Pigmentation: They are sheer for sure, even more so on the eye than what you see in the swatches. For the look I did, I applied 2 layers of the darkest shade on the far right and it was still pretty sheer. They do apply very evenly, though, so the sheerness would be fine for those that prefer more natural looks.

Longevity: Both with and without a primer, these lasted 5 hours before I saw minor creasing.

• They weren’t very powdery or messy in the pan.

• The sheerness could be a turn off for some.
• Limited edition drugstore products can sometimes be difficult to track down.
• The glitter is large enough that it doesn’t really stick and falls down on the cheeks when blending.
• They didn’t last very long, even with a primer.

Worth Buying? Because of the overall undertone, this quad wasn’t my cup of tea. I didn’t find these particular shades that attractive on me. That being said, though, if you are fair with warm undertones and you like sheer, natural eye looks you might like Bare It Buff.

Maybelline Eye Studio Color Plush Silk Eyeshadows promise a creamy, smooth formula with great color payoff. They retail for about $10 and you get 2.5 grams of product. Fall Temptation is limited edition and is part of the Fall 2013 On The Runway Collection.

Colors/Finishes

The individual shades do not have names but I will describe them from left to right:

• Shimmery antique gold. Perfect light gold color with a slight green pull.
• Shimmery pale orange. Reminds me of butternut squash.
• Chocolate brown with gold sparkles. Rich, beautiful brown perfect for the crease and outer corner.
• Matte espresso brown. Very pigmented and easily made opaque.

Performance/Experience

The first antique gold shade had the best quality out of the four shades. It had the smoothest, creamiest texture and the best color payoff. It isn’t too yellow so it would suit many complexions. The light orange shade was also very creamy but had slightly less pigment and required a bit of layering to build up the color. The chocolate brown shade was smooth and creamy although it had a bit of a soft, crumbly texture which required a tiny bit of extra blending to get it to sit smoothly on the eye. The dark espresso brown had good color payoff but the texture was slightly drier and had that same crumbly quality as the chocolate brown shade so it also needed some extra blending to smooth it out on the eye.

They were easy to build up and blend with minimal effort and they had very little fallout. Aside from the light orange shade, which I didn’t feel suited me that well, the remaining shades could suit nearly every complexion. This collection of colors is kind of like a smokier version of your typical everyday neutral eye makeup – perfect for fall but also great for any time of the year. These had decent staying power, creasing after about 6 hours of wear both with and without a primer.

I like how compact the little palette is but at the same time the individual shades are still big enough to get an eyeshadow brush into. I didn’t feel that it was hard to open the lid and it stayed closed securely.

Overall Opinion

The quality of this eyeshadow surpassed my expectations and I would definitely be interested in trying other shades.

Maybelline Color Sensational High Shine Glosses are my favorite drugstore lip glosses that I have tried so far. They have a wax-free formula and offer vibrant color payoff. I am excited to see these new limited edition berry themed shades that are out for fall.

Colors/Finishes

• Berry Brilliance – Hot pink with a slight purple pull and no shimmer.
• Raspberry Ablaze – Deep berry with no shimmer. My favorite shade of the bunch, reminds me of mixed berry smoothies.
• Purple Royale – Cool-toned dark purple with no shimmer.

Performance/Experience

These have a thin gel-like, non-sticky consistency with high color payoff. Berry Brilliance and Raspberry Ablaze were easily built up without getting goopy. Purple Royale only looked good if I applied a single thin layer. When I went back to add another layer it started gathering where my lips come together which was not attractive. These lasted about 2 hours on me, going from a high gloss shine to a balmy finish during that time. They appear to leave a stain on the lips – Raspberry Brilliance stained the most. The packaging is sleek and simple but the clear plastic does scratch easily. The doefoot applicator is slanted and does a decent job of picking up enough gloss for one layer of color. They have a citrusy scent but do not taste like anything.

This formula is excellent. I just wish that the limited edition colors were available for a longer period of time and available to purchase online as well. Sometimes it can be so hard to find limited edition drugstore products because there are usually only a few available on the endcaps in the beauty aisles. Application: This shade has been a bit tricky. Sometimes it applies smoothly and evenly and at other times it applies a little bit patchy and seems to clump up (as you can see demonstrated on my arm swatch below). It applies more sheerly than the three previous shades I reviewed but with two or three layers you can get almost the same opacity as Fuchsia Flash or Hot Plum. It felt moisturizing, creamy, and didn’t slip or move around on the lips. It did get slightly drier as the day wore on but it did not make my lips feel dry. It didn’t settle into lip lines.
Pigmentation: Good pigmentation, semi-opaque. It did leave a slight stain on my lips for a couple of hours but it was nowhere near as obvious as the stain Fuchsia Flash and Hot Plum left on my lips.
Texture: Hot Plum is semi-glossy and remains that way for a couple of hours. Although a little inconsistent in texture, it was thick and creamy and adhered well to the lips.
Longevity: It lasted about 5 hours on me. At that point it faded but it faded fairly evenly. It did not get patchy or dry out my lips over time.

Overall Opinion

Pigmentation: This was nearly-opaque and after the lipstick wore off, it left behind an intense stain, perhaps even more so than Fuchsia Flash. When I swatched it on my arm, the stain was there for over 24 hours.
Texture: Hot Plum is semi-glossy and remains that way for a couple of hours. The texture was thick and creamy and adhered well to the lips.
Longevity: It lasted about 5 hours on me. At that point it had faded a little but it faded evenly. It did not get patchy or dry out my lips over time.

Application: Pink Pop is a little dry and I found that it was best to apply this to freshly exfoliated and moisturized lips. One sweep gave me a semi-sheer wash of color. I could build it up to its maximum opacity and color payoff after about 3 layers. It does settle a little bit into lip lines.
Pigmentation: This had good pigmentation although other shades this product offers such as Fuchsia Flash were more pigmented.
Texture: Pop Pop is semi matte and the other three are semi-glossy. The cosnsistency was thick and it adhered well to the lips. The texture had a tendency to stick to any dry spots or chapping creating a patchy appearance.
Longevity: Around the 3 hour mark Pink Pop started looking patchy and dry although it did not make my lips feel dry.

Overall Opinion

• Vibrant color

Worth buying? If you like the Maybelline Color Sensational formula and you love bubble gum pinks, yes. If you have very dry, chapped lips on a regular basis, then you might want to pass on this one. This color is bright but I wouldn’t say it’s too terribly unique, even at this price point. If you’re not a fan of these particular lipsticks but love the shade, check out NYX lipsticks which offer a wide variety of colors including bright shades like this one.

Color/Finish: Porcelain Ivory Light 1 – This is the lightest shade that is available. It has cool undertones and a natural finish (neither matte nor dewy).
Packaging: The foundation is contained in a glass bottle with a pump. The pump is very easy to work with and allows you to pump and little or as much foundation as you want. It does not have a cap but the pump twists to the side to lock it in place and prevent accidentally dispensing product (for example, when carrying this in a travel bag).
Smell/Fragrance: It has a light fragrance with hints of rose and other floral notes.

Performance

Application: Blends out perfectly and does a good job of not accentuating the dry areas of my face. Once it is blended out, it is hard to tell whether or not you are wearing foundation. Applying this with a dense foundation kabuki brush or a Beauty Blender sponge work equally well.
Pigmentation: Light to medium coverage.
Texture: Even though it has “mousse” in the name, the texture isn’t really like a mousse. It is not airy of fluffy at all. It’s super smooth and creamy, neither runny nor thick, and glides over the skin with ease.
Longevity: I set this with a powder to keep oil at bay and it started to look dewy after 4 hours and got more oily-looking after 5-6 hours. On a cooler day and on someone with dry skin this may last longer than it did on me.

Overall Opinion

Worth buying? If you have a dry to normal skin type and live/work in a mild environment, I recommend this as a good drugstore foundation. It’s a very quick and easy formula that is perfect for everyday no-fuss makeup. Looks very natural to wear all by itself. It doesn’t contain any SPF which can be good or bad depending on your preference but you can always put one on underneath. If you have oily skin or live in a very hot or humid environment, then this will probably not work for you.

Smell/Taste: They have a very light fruity/vanilla fragrance but do not taste like anything.

Performance

Application: Since these are sheer and lightweight, you can just swipe these directly onto your lips without having to use a brush. They feel moisturizing and gel-like when you first apply them and stay that way for about an hour and then they start to dry out.
Pigmentation: These are sheer but yield slightly more color than a tinted lip balm would. They are very similar to the Revlon Lip Butters in terms of color payoff but not as moisturizing. The color will stay on your lips for a short time like a stain after the glossiness fades.
Longevity: 2 – 3 hours total. The initial moisture and shine last about an hour. After two hours they start to feel dry and toward three hours the color fades significantly. The color in Pin Up Peach lasted slightly longer than Pink Possibilities but they both dried out after about the same amount of time.

None of these shades is shimmery but when I look at these up close I can see that there are some sparsely scattered sparkles in the tube which are not visible on the lips. The formula is thin and non-sticky but the color payoff is fantastic. They can be applied sheerly or built up to be nearly opaque without feeling goopy.

Longevity: The shine lasts a maximum of 2 hours and after that a stain is left on the lips for another hour or so. These will not last during a meal or cup of coffee. I wore Gleaming Grenadine during dinner and by the end of the meal the gloss and stain had completely worn off.

Smell/Taste: The smell and taste of these is somewhat citrusy and remind me of the scent of the Fusion plumping lip glosses. It’s not very strong and it fades within minutes of applying.

Packaging: These look slick but they scratch so easily. I haven’t even thrown them in my purse yet and they somehow already have scratches on them. They have a slanted doe-foot applicator that picks up just the right amount of gloss.

Would I buy these again? Yes! These have such a comfortable texture and great color payoff that I am thinking of trying some of the other shades in this line.
