The Urban Decay Wild Greens Palette is a 12 pan palette mainly focusing on greens and oranges along with a few neutrals. There is an even split of mattes and shimmers and also a pretty good balance in the number of shades per color family. The mattes are all fairly similar in texture, color payoff, and overall quality. The shimmers vary from shade to shade, some being smoother with smaller, uniform particles, and others containing a mixture of shimmer and larger sparkles (and the fallout that results from them). It is available for $44 from several retailers including Ulta, Sephora, Nordstrom, Macy’s, and of course Urban Decay.

The mattes have more opacity than the shimmers, apply evenly, blend very easily, and perform consistently across all the shades. They aren’t super intense on pigment but they show up well enough without a ton of effort to build them up. They are pressed loosely enough to make picking color up on my brushes easy but not enough that I get a bunch of kickback in the palette. They felt smooth but slightly dry to the touch. They likely are somewhat dry by the way the shimmers have trouble adhering over the top of them. But I get good wear time out of this palette with primer so this dry quality is something that I’m perfectly fine with. I can wear these all day, even when I’m pretty active and they still hold on well with minimal creasing by the end of the day. Two of them have a tiny amount of sparkle in them (Turmeric and Kale) that shows up much more in the pan than it does on the eye or in swatches. This does cause a tiny bit of sparkle fallout but it is super sparse and hardly noticeable.

The shimmers are sheerer than the mattes and aren’t all that impressive upon first swatch but they do build nicely. They require some help if applied over the mattes but stick just fine over a primer or over bare lids. I have also used them over glitter glue and that works beautifully as well. I would suggest using the shimmers first and then going in with mattes or just using a glitter glue over the mattes. This is the opposite of how I normally apply eyeshadow it might be a drawback to consider if you don’t want to change the order of application. 4 out of the 6 shimmers have larger sparkles and significant sparkle fallout. I like all of those shades so I am willing to put up with it to wear them. I think the choice of shimmer shades perfectly compliments that mattes in the palette and a few of them are somewhat unique. Fuzz is probably the most unique, having a mostly orange look in the pan but an unexpected sparkly teal shift in the light once applied to the eye. Twist is also a kind of unique shade of pale golden green.

Wear time is about 9 hours with primer and 6 hours without primer. This is a little longer wearing on me than average. I typically get about 4 hours of wear time out of eyeshadow without primer.

The packaging is something different for Urban Decay at least from the things I’ve purchased/seen from them in recent memory. It is all cardboard and the lid flips open from the center like two doors and is held shut magnetically. When I have this palette laying on my desk to use it, it takes up a lot of space, but it is possible to completely fold both sides of the lid over the back of the palette without forcing it. Not such a big deal.

Swatches

Chill is a smooth shimmer with only small particles. None of the times I’ve used it required any kind of help. It showed up easily without having to try too hard and I didn’t notice much (if any) fallout from it.

Lo-fi is a soft light peach. I was a bit nervous that this would not show up well on my skintone but I ended up enjoying the color payoff from this shade.

Kickback is a medium neutral brown. It has just enough depth for what I like and complements the oranges and greens in the palette. Blends out easily.

Fuzz is an orange shimmer with a not so obvious blue-green shift. This is a chunkier shimmer with lots of sparkle. It takes a few layers to build it up to a point where the color of it is easier to see. One layer will give me a sparkly wash of indistinct color. If I build up multiple layers, use a wet brush, or apply it over a glitter glue, I can much more clearly tell that there is a blue green shift to the shade.

Turmeric is a matte orange with a bit of large orange sparkle. If I apply this over large area and pack it on, I can see the sparkle but it is still very subtle. There isn’t enough in there that sparkle fallout is really bothersome (or even noticeable) for me.

Hi-vibe looks a lot like Fuzz in the pan but they are pretty different. This one has more of a pinkish base color with a golden shift. This one also has larger sparkles but they are smaller than the ones in Fuzz. While that one has an almost glittery finish, this one is more sublte and glimmering.

Earthside is a light neutral brown. It is light enough to look different from Kickback when they are used side by side and works well as a transtion.

Supergreens is a pastel green. It is difficult to tell if this is more of a yellow or a blue green. Next to Kale, this looks more blue but by itself, it seems to lean more yellow. Beautiful color payoff (much better than I expected), sits nicely on the skin, not dry-looking or chalky.

Prickly is a light blue-green shimmer with a soft yellow sheen and chunkier blue and green sparkles. Needs some help to really get it to show up in a satisfying way.

Twist is more like an accent shade or topper to me. At some angles, it hardly shows up at all and at others it really reflects the light. It seems to be mostly composed of medium sized golden shimmer with a light grey base color that is more obvious when seen from an angle, rather than from straight ahead. It needs to be layered to help it show up more or the shimmer scatters a bit too much.

Kale is another beautifully smooth, pigmented shade that blends easily. This one has some sparkles in it like Turmeric. Same story with this, they don’t show up all that much and there isn’t much fallout from them. This shade is clearly yellow-leaning.

Stash has one of the softer shimmer finishes in the palette, closer to being a satin. Shows up nicely as an olive next to the other shades. No large sparkles.

The mattes I used here all performed well. I applied Hi-Vibe with a dry flat brush but it did need some building to adhere well to the lid. Doesn’t show up as nicely as it swatches. Same with Twist, but because I was applying this shade to such a small area, I decided to wet the brush to have better control of placement. Both of these shades had a decent amount of sparkle fallout.

The shimmers I used here did the same thing as the previous look. I wet the brush for both and had to clean up sparkle dust under my eyes after. For the green on the lower lashline, I used a bit of concealer underneath to help it pop more.

For the mattes, I applied the deeper shade first and then went around the edges with the lighter shade. All of the shadows seem to have issues adhering once at least one matte is placed on the lid. It is easier to blend out the deeper shades first than possibly be unable to build up color if applied after. I also decided to use a glitter glue with most of the shimmers (except for the inner corner shade) just to get them to pop. I could have also wet the brush but I feel like using a glitter glue gets me a slightly different result. Lots of sparkle fallout from the chunkier shimmers.

Look #4:

• Kickback  – All over lid, crease, outer lower lashline
• Earthside – Transition, inner lower lashline
• Stash – Outer 2/3 of lid (applied over Too Faced Glitter Glue)

I did the same thing with the mattes in this look as I did in Look #3. I probably could have skipped the glitter glue for Stash but I do think it helped the subtle shimmer in it stand out a bit more and give it a little bit more depth.

I used all the shimmers without the help of any setting spray or sticky primers but made a conscious effort to avoid putting them over any of the matte shades. I tried as much as possible to only have them over bare skin or my eyeshadow primer. Prickly adhered best on the eye without any primer and had much less fallout. Fuzz still had a lot of fallout but most of the time this happens when I use chunky shimmers on the lower lashline anyway.

Comparisons

Here are a few of my other palettes with greens in them shown next to the Urban Decay Wild Greens Palette. Above I have the ColourPop Just My Luck and Mint To Be palettes, the Smashbox Desert Palette and the Natasha Denona Mini Gold Palette.

I’d say the two on the bottom have a similar idea going where greens are chosen as compliments to the other shades and you can get something that feels more complete with palettes like these. If you have either of these or have been interested in them, you’d probably like the Wild Greens palette. The shimmers in both of the palettes on the bottom are a bit more opaque in one swatch/layer than those from Urban Decay. However, the mattes in the Urban Decay palette are better than the ones in the Smashbox and Natasha Denona palettes (more consistent quality, easy to build up and blend out, not patchy at all).

The two ColourPop palettes, being monochromatic are more challenging to use alone (at least for me), and I like them better to use alongside other palettes. The main reason I pulled these out was so that you can get a better idea of the depth and tone of the greens in the UDWG palette. The ColourPop shimmers are generally good and consistent in quality but the mattes are kind of hit and miss depending on the shade.

Product Details and Packaging

The Urban Decay Naked Ultraviolet Palette features peachy neutrals, purples, and a variety of finishes including matte, satin, shimmer, and sparkling shimmer shades. It retails for $49 and contains 12 shades, each 0.95 g / 0.03 oz.

The palette is made of plastic and has a magnetic closure. Inside, a large high quality mirror and a double ended, sythetic brush is included. One one side of the brush you get a rounded pencil brush and the other side is a medium-sized, round, fluffy brush. I found the quality of the brush to be surprisingly nice – perhaps nicer than some of the brushes included in Urban Decay’s older Naked palettes. The brush hairs were very soft and comfortable against the skin and there was enough density to apply color evenly and with control. The names of the shadows are printed underneath each shade inside the palette.

The front of the palette is beautifully designed with shimmering, metallic swirls of purple, pink and teal set underneath a clear plastic top.

Formula Overview

There are 2 true mattes, 3 satins, 3 standard shimmers, and 4 sparkling shimmer shades. The majority of the shades are fairly sheer with some being a bit more buildable than others. Everything was easy to blend out and fallout occurred mostly with the sparkling shimmer shades (Dazed, V.R., Cyber Punk, and Purple Dust) and a tiny bit with the standard shimmers (Lucid, Warning, and Euphoric). The fallout was heavier when using a brush to apply those shades than when using my finger. There was surprisingly no fallout from the deepest shade (Digital). I didn’t feel that the shades were particularly powdery or messy in the pan. They were also not pressed too hard or difficult to pick up.

Shade Selection

This group of shades is good for someone that is a bit apprehensive about wearing bright or colorful eyeshadow. The eyeshadows are sheer but somewhat buildable and blend easily, making color a little more approachable. They might not entice someone who’s well versed in wearing colorful shadows and that person likely already has similar shades in more pigmented formulas in their collection.

As a standalone palette, the color selection makes me feel sort of boxed in because there are so few mattes. I prefer to use a lot of matte shadows in my looks and only bring in a few shimmers (at the very most) to add some dimension at the end. Because of that, I think this might be better as a companion palette.

Of course this isn’t the only way to wear eyeshadow. As an art form, you can create looks with any textures or colors you please. I’m just pointing this out so that you consider the style of makeup you like to wear and think about whether this palette will be a good fit for you.

For somebody that has a lot of eyeshadows, but maybe not necessarily some of these shades, this palette might fill some gaps in your collection.

Wear Time

I wore looks #4 and #5 for 9.5 hours and they were creased pretty badly by then. Being a thinner-feeling formula I’m not surprised as thinner eyeshadows tend to crease earlier in the day on me.

Individual Shades

• Trippin’ – Peachy beige with satin finish.
• Mind Slip – Light peach with matte finish.
• Dazed – Subtle duochrome. Medium rosy pink base with gold shimmer finish. Some larger sparkles in this. Possible to get decent payoff with a brush but I prefer to apply with my finger. Small amount of fallout when using finger, more fallout with brush.

• Hacked – Medium mauve with a matte finish.
• V.R. – This shade is made up mostly of fine multicolored sparkles with a few larger sparkles mixed in. Mauve is the dominant color with teal, light green and blue iridescence.
• Lucid – Clear base with light bluish-green sheen. No large sparkles.

• Optimized – Light lavender with a subtle satin finish.
• Warning – Medium pink base with a blue satin sheen.
• Cyber Punk – Medium purple base with a subtle blue satin sheen and larger pink sparkles. Possible to get decent payoff with a brush but I prefer to apply with my finger. Small amount of fallout when using finger, more fallout with brush.

• Euphoric – Medium purple base with a shimmery blue sheen.
• Purple Dust – Deep grey base with pink and blue iridescence.
• Digital – Deep grey base with plummy-bronze satin sheen.

• Warning – (lid) I applied a little of this between the peachy shimmer in the center of the lid and the purple shimmer on the outer lid. It didn’t really show up all that well against the deeper purple.
• Fenty Beauty Full Frontal Mascara

The eyeshadow primer I used here has a very pale, almost white color to it and a more emollient feel to it. I think the base helped the lightness/brightness of these shades come out a little more. This look didn’t wear very long on me. This eye primer is nice to use just to have fun with color but it’s not a good one for extending wear time on me.

Performance

Smell/Fragrance: No fragrance. I didn’t notice any smell with application. If I pump it out on my hand and actively look for a smell, there is a very faint mineral/earthy/powdery kind of scent.

Shade: 20NN is a decent shade match. It has more yellow undertones than I was expecting but once I blend it out, it looks fine. I didn’t notice any oxidation after I applied it or as I wore it throughout the day.

Application: When I use a brush to apply this, it pools in pores and looks terrible. For the best finish, I use my fingers to tap the foundation onto my skin and then blend it in with a damp sponge. This results in a much lighter coverage but a far better and more natural finish. I think the reason it looks so bad applied with a brush is that this formula dries down very fast. I recommend working in small sections rather than attempting to apply it all over your face and blend it all in at once. This isn’t a foundation I would turn to if I was in a rush or wasn’t feeling patient. It takes some work to get it to look good. I also need to go into this with well-prepped skin (exfoliated and very well moisturized).

Texture and Finish: The consistency is on the thinner side but I wouldn’t describe it as watery. It smooths the look of pores and leaves the skin with a natural matte finish. It’s not a dry-looking matte but it doesn’t add any extra glow to my skin either. “Weightless” is accurate. It doesn’t feel like anything on my skin.

Coverage: Light. On my skin, this is not buildable in the slightest. If I try, it ends up pooling in my pores and becoming patchy. Not sure if this is because of my skin type, my skincare products, or just the way this formula is.

Longevity: This lasts all day on me as long as I apply it well from the get-go. I do need to blot, but after about 6 hours on my forehead and 8 hours on my cheeks. It takes a longer time to get greasy looking than many of the other foundations in my collection. I don’t need to set it at all if I don’t want to. Powder blush, powder bronzer, etc will blend over it just fine. Choosing not to set this foundation will give it the best chance of looking good for a long time. If I do powder it, then as it gets oily throughout the day, that powder will begin to look cakey. It’s also not totally transfer-proof. Once it gets a bit oily, and I blot, a tiny bit of the foundation will come off on the blotting sheet.

Overall Opinion

This is a light coverage, long-wearing, matte formula with a thinner consistency. It’s not forgiving on textured or dry skin. In order for it to apply well, my skin needs to be in great condition (well hydrated, exfoliated, moisturized). It takes a lot of effort for me to get my skin into the condition it needs to be in for this to work, so this is not a good product match for me, personally. I think it would work best on someone with normal or slightly oily skin with very minimal texture, smaller pores, and someone who doesn’t need/want very much coverage.

The Urban Decay Backtalk Palette is a face and eye palette containing 8 eyeshadows, 2 blushes, and 2 highlighters. It retails for $46. The palette is divided by a removable mirror and is held closed with a magnet. This mirror has to be placed back into the palette for it to close properly and there is also a certain direction it must be facing. Both sides of the mirror are magnetized differently.

The shades weren’t what I was expecting. I was expecting softer more mauve-y looks from this palette and what it actually gives me are bolder, pinker looks.

The way I typically do an eye look doesn’t work quite as well for me with the shades provided. For example, my first instinct was to use Backtalk as a crease shade and Attitude on the lid but these two shades have such similar undertones that the look turned into a reddish muddy mess.

The two lighter shimmer shades, Bare and Curve, are too similar. When I see 2 shades that are similar in a palette, it makes me feel like I’m getting one less shade than was promised.

The shades are generally soft and smooth with a small amount of powderiness in the pan. After several uses, I can see a slight dusting of loose powder on the packaging but nothing that bothers me. I only experienced fallout from the shade 180. The shimmers are softer with a satiny finish. The only one that comes close to being metallic is Attitude.

The pigmentation is not terribly intense but I also wouldn’t describe it as weak. There is a nice middle ground here with the color payoff from all of the shades. Everything blended out easily for me.

The highlighters look darker in the pan than they apply to the face. I initially thought Low Key would be more of a blush topper for me, but it works as a highlighter on my skin tone. The peachy tone you see in the pan is much sheerer once blended out on the cheek.

After wearing the eyeshadows for 8 hours, the eye I used Nars Pro Prime on held up flawlessly. The unprimed eye had a little bit of creasing but generally still looked decent. The blushes and highlighters wore well for 8 hours with very minimal fading.

What it is: The fourth iteration of the Urban Decay Naked Palette which focuses on shades used in smoky eyeshadow looks. The shades are mainly in the neutral family but they vary widely which allows for looks ranging from extremely subtle to highly dramatic.

Packaging: The packaging is made of a translucent grey plastic with dark swirls resembling ribbons of smoke. It closes shut with a magnet and has a nice large mirror inside the lid. A double ended synthetic brush was included, one end having a medium size crease brush and the other a smaller precision dome brush. The brush is really nice and adds value to the palette, I feel, because it works well particularly for smoky looks where you need to blend A LOT and precisely place color.

Smell/Fragrance: Just a very faint mineral smell if I get up close to the powder. Otherwise, I don’t notice any smell at all.

Performance

Application: Most shades are pretty straightforward to work with. Armor has some glitter fallout so if you want to use this shade, you probably want to do your foundation/concealer afterwards. The darker matte shades take some time to blend out properly and do look better over a primer. They can look patchy at times and it helps to build up the color in layers rather that slapping on a whole lot of color at once. I’ve tried this palette with Nars Pro Prime and Urban Decay Primer Potion and the latter worked much better with these shades. UD Primer Potion has a slightly drier feel once applied which helps alleviate any patchiness that could happen with a more sticky/emollient type of eyeshadow base.

Texture: The matte shades on the right have a nice smooth texture which transfers easily and they aren’t powdery or dusty. The shimmers on the left are quite creamy but can bunch and flake up if applied heavily. Three shades in the middle (Black Market, Dagger, and Smolder) are on the drier, firmer side.

Pigmentation: Most shades have excellent pigmentation. Three of the shades (Black Market, Dagger, and Smolder) have a drier formula and don’t transfer as easily but they build up well with minimal fallout for being such dark colors.

Longevity: I only got 4-5 hours of wear before noticing some slight creasing on unprimed eyes. Over primer, these lasted 8 hours.

Overall Opinion

So this is the 4th version of these palettes and I pretty much decided immediately that I was going this get this. As the first reviews came out (before the palette was available to the public), I saw several bloggers and YouTubers make comments along the lines of:

“It’s a nice palette but it’s not something you really need.”

I think they are right, not because of the quality (which is quite good), but because there are so many Naked Palettes now. I bought it partly because I liked the shade selection and partly because I had the urge to have a complete collection.

Pros:

• Most shades have good color payoff and apply well
• Enough matte shades for a completely matte look
• You can create an everyday natural look or a very dramatic look
• The included brush (especially the small dome brush end) is super helpful for placing color precisely

Cons:

• It might have been nice if, in place of Combust, they included something slightly darker or another shade in addition to it
• Smolder is one shade I don’t feel I get much use out of. It looks more grey than purple and there is already plenty of grey in this palette.
• The dark matte shades are a bit tricky to apply and get to look well-blended (but it is doable)

Worth Buying? Yes but only if the shades are what you are looking for. It’s not the most universally flattering selection of shades but that’s why they have several Naked palettes to choose from. It’s a good quality palette and offers variety in terms of what kinds of looks you can get out of it, and the price is fair for what you get. Those of you that prefer warm colors on your eyes will probably not get much use out of this. The shades are neutral-to-cool but not so cool that the colors will look out of place on a warmer skin tone.

What it is: Urban Decay Naked Basics 2 is the sequel to the original Naked Basics palette. It consists of 5 matte shades and 1 satin shade. These shades are mostly neutral but are supposed to be a bit cooler-toned than those in the original Naked Basics Palette.

Packaging: Pretty much the same as the original, it has a sturdy plastic case with a large mirror on the inside of the lid. Opens and closes easily, stays shut securely. The names are printed below each shade. The size and shape of the palette is really nice because it doesn’t take up a lot of space in my drawer and it’s also really handy for travelling.

Smell/Fragrance: Very faint scent but no fragrance that I can smell.

Performance

Application: On bare lids, these apply well but they do look and blend better over a primer. They take bit of work to blend out evenly, which isn’t surprising for matte shadows, but the end result turns out beautifully for an everyday/work/school look.

Texture: They are soft, but not super silky and just a tad powdery but they don’t create too much of a mess in the palette. Fallout is minimal but more obvious when using darker shades, so remember to tap off any excess before taking your brush to your lid.

Pigmentation: All six shades have good pigmentation.

Longevity: On bare lids, I get about 5 hours of wear before they start to fade and crease. When worn over Urban Decay Primer Potion I got almost 11 hours of uncreased/unfaded wear! I don’t know that I’ve ever gotten such long wear out of an eyeshadow before. It’s interesting how just adding the primer so drastically changed the wear time. Typically I only get 1-2 more hours of wear by using a primer.

Comparisons and Alternatives

Naked Basics vs. Naked 2 Basics

Naked Basics has more contrasting shades that range from very pale to very dark, whereas Naked 2 Basics has a better selection of in-between shades. I feel like this makes it easier to achieve a well blended gradient since you can use a couple of transition shades. Frisk is noticeably grey-hued compared to Naked2 in the original. If you look at the last photo in the post, you can see how the reddish/pinkish tones in Cover clearly show up. The combo of these two are mainly what sell this palette as being cooler toned than the original. If I had to choose one or the other, I’d probably go with the original because, to me, it’s creates a truer neutral eye look that doesn’t lean too warm or too cool.

Sonia Kashuk Neutral Matte Eyeshadow Palette

Sonia Kashuk’s palette is a great alternative. It’s costs about $20 and you get 15 shades to work with. The quality is very comparable in terms of color payoff and blendability but they aren’t quite as smooth as Urban Decay matte shadows. The downsides are that you don’t get a mirror in the palette and the square shape of the shadows makes it less easy to use a brush (but not by much). If you need some great basic mattes but want to save some money, I’d go for this one.

Physician’s Formula Matte Collection Quads

Physician’s Formula Matte Quads (about $7 each) are also a great alternative, though not as versatile as the Sonia Kashuk palette. The formula is pretty similar to Sonia Kashuk, not as smooth as Urban Decay but it certainly has decent enough color payoff and blendability. There are 3 quads and they include sponge-tip applicators but no mirror.

Overall Opinion

Pros:

• Good color payoff
• Lasted a really long time over Urban Decay Primer Potion
• Good selection of colors for everyday, natural looks
• Great compact packaging for travel, doesn’t take up a lot of space

Cons:

• Could be a bit easier to blend given how close the shades are to each other (but it does blend thoroughly)
• Ever so slightly powdery

Worth Buying?

Yes. The quality of this palette is up there. There are a few minor cons but nothing that would prevent me from buying it. I think it’s going to be best for those that prefer cooler colors, taupes, and pinks (like those that had more affection for the UD Naked 2 and 3 palettes). The packaging is what seals the deal and differentiates it from other neutral matte palettes, with it’s smart use of space and great compact size.

What it is: Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Ultra Definition Liquid Makeup is an oil-free, fragrance-free, and paraben-free foundation that is supposed to give your skin a real life retouched look while offering ultra lightweight, comfortable wear. It also has lots of beneficial ingredients (Matrixyl 3000-Anti-wrinkle and lifting peptides, Litchiderm, Green Tea, Vitamin E, Sodium Hyaluronate) to act as preventative anti-aging and to keep skin hydrated.

Price/Quantity: $39 for 30mL / 1oz

Availability: Urban Decay, Sephora, Ulta, Macy’s

Selection: 18 Shades, including both warm and cool undertones.

Finish/Coverage: Demi-matte finish, light to medium coverage.

Packaging: Plastic container with a pump and a gunmetal reflective lid. The pump offers good control over how much product I want to dispense. There is something that sounds like a bead inside the container that helps to mix the foundation when you shake it.

Smell/Fragrance: It has a little bit of a paint like smell which is fairly faint but those that are sensitive may not like this. I don’t find it super offensive. I’ve definitely smelled stronger smelling foundations than this one.

Performance

Application: This foundation applied and blended easily overall. It can be applied using fingers only, with a foundation brush, or with a Beauty Blender. It can grab onto dry skin or settle into very large pores but with the help of a blending brush I can make it look much more tolerable. On areas with dry flakey skin a damp Beauty Blender sponge worked the best for not emphasizing the dry patches as much. A foundation (Sigma Kabuki) made the flakes more obvious. Using a Sigma Kabuki, however, did give me better results as far as concealing large pores and giving a tiny bit more coverage. When using fingers only, the pore blurring effect wasn’t as easy to achieve. This method also requires more careful blending to avoid a streaky appearance. It feels super lightweight, almost like you aren’t wearing makeup at all.

Shade: I used the shade 1.0. I originally received a sample for the shade 2.0 which was almost perfect for my skin over the summer. But I purchased this early last fall and I figured it would be better to go a bit lighter. I kind of wish I went with the shade 2.0 but I can certainly work with the shade I have.

Coverage: The coverage isn’t enough for me to skip concealer even when attempting to build it up. It is buildable but if you are going to do that, just be careful to apply thin layers to keep the finish looking as natural as possible.

Finish: The overall effect isn’t quite like Urban Decay claims (being retouched). The texture it creates is beautiful, though. It leaves the skin with a velvety soft matte appearance but doesn’t make the skin look dry. It creates a nice soft canvas for powder blush. If you have oily skin you probably should set this with a powder. If you have dry to normal skin then you could probably get away without setting it.

Texture/Consistency: It has a softening effect on skin texture. Pores don’t become completely invisible but the texture looks far smoother and pores appear smaller. Fine lines appear softer. It dries down well so that powder products can be applied directly over the foundation without the need to apply setting powder first. Because I have combination skin, I use setting powder on the oiliest parts of my face to help it last longer. It doesn’t set too quickly so I have enough time to blend it in thoroughly without creating a streaky appearance. It is thinner than your average foundation and is slightly runny but not watery. It spreads easily over the skin.

Longevity: After 4-5 hours it stops controlling oil and needs a little bit of a touch-up. It doesn’t look awful by this time but it definitely doesn’t look freshly applied either.

Worth Buying?

This is a foundation that would best suit people that already have pretty good skin and like that little bit of extra perfection that a lighter coverage foundation can bring. You could say this foundation creates a “your skin but better” effect. It’s not going to hide things like breakouts, dark spots, or redness but it will blur pores, even skin tone, and give you a slightly healthier, more awake look. As long as you don’t have a lot of dry patches, it blends in well enough that you can’t see it on the skin unless you are looking in a 10X makeup mirror. The drawback is that this foundation isn’t going to be great for those with skin that’s excessively dry or oily.

Urban Decay Naked Basics is a palette with 6 neutral shades. All except one are matte. It retails for $27 and you get a total of 7.8g / 0.3oz of product. The orginal Naked and Naked 2 palettes are overall a better value at $4.17 dollars per shadow while Naked Basics costs $4.5 dollars per shadow. Still though, you can’t beat the price when you consider the quality of these eyeshadows.

Colors

Venus – Pale beige with a satin finish.
Foxy – Very pale yellow with a matte finish.
W.O.S. – Very pale pink with a matte finish.
Naked 2 – Light brown with a matte finish.
Faint – Medium brown with a matte finish.
Crave – Dark espresso brown with a matte finish.

Foxy is the only shade that has okay pigmentation and all the rest have great pigmentation. Interestingly the Foxy in this palette is smoother and has better color payoff than the one in my Naked 2 palette. Did anyone else experience this?

Performance

I wore these eyeshadows without a primer for a total of 9 hours. My eyeshadow remained perfect until about the 6th hour when I could see just a hint of creasing. Over the next three hours they creased a tiny bit more.

Packaging

I like everything about the packaging except for one thing. It’s kind of hard to open. Otherwise I like it’s compact size, the large mirror inside the lid, and the rubberized material it is made of. It’s about the size of a mobile phone.

Overall Impression

I am very happy with this palette. I am a huge fan of matte/neutral eyeshadows. Until now, my very favorite matte eyeshadows were my Inglot eyeshadows but these are right on par with them AND they are in a compact convenient palette. Even though I love matte eyeshadows, I am glad they included one satin shade because sometimes you do want to strategically add some glimmer to give the look more dimension. This is definitely going to be my go-to travel palette.

Foxy – Very pale matte yellow. Poor color payoff. The yellow in this makes it somewhat useful for hiding the blueness in my inner corner. Not the most natural looking highlight for my NW20 skintone.
Half Baked – Metallic gold. Very smooth and pigmented. Easy to blend. Metallic when applied heavily and shimmery when applied lightly.
Bootycall – Sheer satin champagne. Blends well.
Chopper – Metallic copper with silver micro glitter. Blends easily. Has fallout of both glitter and color. Like Half Baked, this is metallic when applied heavily and shimmery when applied lightly.

Tease – Matte dusky lilac-brown. Decent but not amazing color payoff and blendability. Applies sheer but can be built up easily. Good crease/blending color. Creates a subtle shadow.
Snakebite – Satin bronze with golden sheen. Excellent color payoff and blendability. One of my favorites in the palette, especially for the outer V. Has some fallout.
Suspect – Golden beige shimmer. Excellent color payoff and blendability.
Pistol – Medium warm greyish shimmer. This color is enigmatic. It could pass for pewter, antique gold, or just plain grey depending on the light. Good color payoff and excellent blendability.

Verve – Light shimmery beige. Texture is a little bit gritty but blends well.
YDK – Metallic coppery bronze. Blends well but has quite a bit of fallout.
Busted – Dark plummy brown with a satin finish. Good for outer V. Not as easy to blend. Dark base sticks to skin while shimmer is easily buffed away. Has some fallout.
Blackout – Matte black. Very dark but not the blackest black I’ve ever used. Black is inherently difficult to blend but this one blends decently.

Overall Impression

The things that eventually sold me on this palette were the matte highlighter, matte black, double ended brush, and the silver/grey colors. The brush is really nice and blackout is a very welcome addition to my UD collection however Foxy’s lack of pigmentation and YDK’s massive fallout were a bummer. The color range is just okay, as too many of the eyeshadows are too close in color and texture to be able to discern them individually on the eye. There is a lot of yellow gold shimmer in this palette. Some shades are darker, some are more copper, some are more brown. I expected to find fewer golds since this is marketed as a “Taupe + Greige Neutrals” palette.

Do I have a preference?

I prefer Naked 1 but only by a very small margin. Naked 1 has less fallout overall and a slightly better variety of colors. A matte highlight isn’t essential because you could always use your face powder in its place. Creep is pretty close in color to Blackout depending on how you apply it. Most of the time, I use these colors as eyeliner so its not a huge difference for me. I like the double ended brush better in the Naked 2 palette because it gives it more value and usability.
